Size & Population
Total area = 465,030 acres (726.6 sq. mi.) Ranks 8th smallest of California's 58 counties - 96% of land is public; with only 4% under private ownership. Alpine County is the smallest county, by population, in the state of California. As of the 2000 census, it had a population of 1,208.
Elevation
Elevation ranges from about 4800' to over 11,400'. The Central Sierra Nevada is the dominant land feature, with the Carson and Antelope Valleys bordering on the east.
