Salmon Fishing off the Coast of Northern California Canceled!

Due to the serious decline in numbers of Chinook Salmon returning to the Sacramento River, the Pacific Fisheries Management Council has made a decision to cancel the season for Ocean Salmon Fishing up and down the west coast this year. The impact of this decision on the California Fishing Industry has prompted Govenor Arnold Schwatzenegger to petition President Bush for emergency disaster relief. The Commercial Fishing Industry on the west coast has been in decline for many years now, and this season may be the final blow for many commercial fishermen who rely on the prized Chinook Salmon season for a major portion of their annual revenue. This decision will also have a dramatic impact on the Sport Fishing Industry, as many avid fishermen consider the Chinook Salmon Season the highlight of the year.

There are many theories being touted as the cause of the decline in fish over the past several years. A few of the root causes being placed on the top of the list are water diversions, ocean water temperatures, logging and agricultural activities, as well as a dramatic reduction in a sustainable food chaiin available for young fish to survive the migration to the ocean It is safe to say, that we have a dire situation on our hands that warrants immediate action. Unfortunately for all of us, it seems that the only immediate action that can be taken is to suspend the fising season and hope that there will be more effective measures implemented that can reverse the current trends.
