Owen R. Cheatham, founder of Georgia-Pacific Corporation, was inspired to preserve this site in the Grizzly Creek area because of an exceptional stand of coast redwood groves located within this area. The Van Duzen River flows beside the campground and makes it a popular area to camp, hike, fish, swim and picnic.
The park is located approximately 37 miles southeast of Eureka. 20 Miles south of Eureka on hi-way 101, then east on hi-way 36 another 17 miles. Don't blink when you think you're getting close, because you'll miss it.
The area recievs up to 65" of rain or more annually, so dress appropriately during the October through May seasons. Summer brings 70 - 80 degree days, with up to 90 degrees and higher on occasion.
There are 30 campsites. Canoeing, kayaking, Trout, Salmon & Steelhead fishing & swimming in Van Duzen River. There is a group camp &/or picnic area, 4.5 miles of hiking trails, a horse shoe pit, an environmental camp, and a visitor center with exhibits and bookstore.
Relatively small in size, Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park comprises just a few acres, but it is large enough to provide you with a sense of seclusion. Visit the Park during the week, and you could very well find that peace and quite you seek among one of its groves of coast redwoods.
You can visit the beautiful Victorian village of Ferndale for an old time shopping experience, or visit Fort. Humboldt to the north, or head to Humboldt Redwoods State Park with Avenue of the Giants to the south. Ruth Lake is about an hour or so further up hi-way 36 to the east.
