Why Do an Engine Swap

There could be one or more of several reasons for doing an engine swap in a Jeep. Which of these is yours?

  • More Power

Most often, an engine swap is done for the purpose of getting more power to the wheels. More power! hmmmmn. Sounds like another good place for a favorite Tim Allen quote.

Having more power in a Jeep has several benefits. Not the least of which is being able to go faster!

Having more power also means not having to shift into third gear every time you hit the slightest slope in the road on your travels.

  • Better Fuel Economy

There is a theory out there that I am looking forward to proving. That is, that if you have more power in the form of higher displacement (more cubic inches), you will not need to use as much fuel to accomplish the speeds needed for traveling down the freeway. I am inclined to agree. I was getting about 10 MPG with my four banger, and I truly believe that fuel consumption will be reduced due to not having to drive around in third gear with my foot to the floor.

  • Neccessity

Sometimes doing an engine swap in your Jeep is a neccessity. Although the engines Jeeps come with are very reliable and I have heard that they will last forever if treated right, sometimes things just happen and replacement is the only option. And if you are going to be replacing your engine anyway, why not go all out and install a V8? I know it is a lot more complicated and could be quite expensive, but I for one would not waste my time, money, and effort on putting another 4 cylinder in my Jeep unless somebody gave it to me for nothing and offered to do the work for real cheap.

  • You just want to be different

Sometimes the event of an engine swap is an attempt to just be different from the crowd. This is a very ligitimate reason. There's nothing wrong with wanting to be different, and if you have the money, time and resources to get it done, then more POWER to you!

  • You just thought it would be a good idea, and in the process you might learn a lot about doing it so you could share this knowledge with others.

Believe it or not, this is done quite often by people who have nothing better to do, and they just want to get involved in a project for the sole purppose of being able to say "I did it". Usually, the people that do this for this reason have all of the necessary resources available to get it done... A Jeep, a shop, the time, money and probably a few freinds to help them through it.

So what are your reasons for doing this? My reasons are "all of the above" except I fall a bit short on the last part of the last reason.

I am doing this engine swap because:

1- I have always wanted to do this.

2 - I am looking forward to having "More Power, and better fuel economy".

3 - The little AX-5 Tranny in my Jeep went out and the cost to replace it is, in my mind, a waste of money that could be used toward getting what I always wanted done anyway.

4 - I too, want my Jeep to be different from the crowd.

5 - And last, but not least, I wanted to do this because it will be a great learning experience and I will be able to share my new found knowledge with others, as well as be able to say "I did it"!
